The USS Macon was a rigid airship built for the US navy as a flying aircraft carrier for scouting missions. After it crashed off the California coast, the US canceled the airship program but had the program continued, according to one of the historians interviewed, and airships were stationed in the Pacific theater, an airship on patrol might have spotted the approaching Japanese fleet in 1941.
